FLAKO – A GENIUS

Posted on December 19, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

Unintentionally off-the-grid and committed to his personal sound evolution, Flako is more of a Soul-documentarian than a typical beat maker. With roots in Chile, raised in Germany, and currently living in London via Berlin – the man himself is a melange of flavors. His particular sonic palette is a mercurial blend of warm analogue colors and cutting-edge design. His writing is marked by manifest emotion. In a world jaded – caustic with sarcasm and packaged in plastic, he’s an example of an artist who’s fearless with his humanity. Not a fiend for the limelight, there’s no gimmick to his craft – ’cause in the end it’s all about an honest, well written tune.

MELODY’ S ECHO CHAMBER

Posted on November 5, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

Melody Prochet, the Parisian psych-popper who records as Melody’s Echo Chamber, released her self-titled album last month. Before that she released the video for one of the album’s highlights ‘You Won’t Be Missing That Part Of Me’. The video was filmed by Matthew Saville in Perth, Australia  and it’ s full of psychedelic effects and sun-dazed cinematography around the recording. It’s an  insight into Melody’s world in all its hazy sun-blistered brilliance. Watch the video on You Tube and follow Melody’s Echo Chamber on Tumblr.

The album is a collection of songs that were written between the months of May and June 2012, and they are his most introspective and moving to date. This is an album of spiritual and musical journey, and features some of Teen Daze’s most captivating songs. The Inner Mansions” will be released on November 6. Follow TEEN DAZE on Bandcamp

PINES, A FINE FRENZY

Posted on October 26, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

PINES, Alison Sudol’s third full-length as A Fine Frenzy (release date: October 9, 2012), is a fable about a pining tree who is given the unheard-of chance (for a conifer) to make a life of her own choosing. Drawing inspiration from the redwood forests and dramatic landscapes of Northern California and Washington’s Cascade Mountains, the thirteen new original songs survey a sonic landscape as vast and deep as the woods, their namesake.
Sudol crafted PINES in response to our accelerating pace of life in the 21st century.

Sometimes I feel like the world has been strapped onto the back of a giant rocket and it’s hurtling us into the unknown at a pace we’re not entirely equipped to deal with. All kinds of things are falling off, good and bad. It’s a crazy, exciting, terrifying time- so much is changing, and fast. Yet some of the most wonderful things in the world are slow- rivers and seasons and turning leaves and growing older with the ones you love. I wanted to create an environment where a person could retreat to, somewhere vivid and real where their minds and hearts could wander freely. I wanted it to be a place you could go to feel, like a quiet spot in a forest or the sea on a cloudy day.” Continue Reading →

FLYING LOTUS, UNTIL THE QUIET COMES

Posted on October 10, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

Composed, according to Flying Lotus, as “a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies”, Until the Quiet Comes has the distinct feel of this nocturnal trip. From the twitching descent into a subconscious state and the out-of-focus time-ether of the journey that follows, the sound is an unhinged, yet elegant evolution of the melodic and rhythmic interplay that is woven into the DNA of Flying Lotus’ aural personae.
All this stylistic mingling and genre-melting has contributed significantly to shift music in a direction that makes intellectual leaps without forsaking the all-important heft of a bassline or unimpeded ‘swing’ of a drum beat – the same way so many masters of soul music have infused their songs for lovers and dancers with brilliant and heady subtext for decades. TAMARYN, TENDER NEW SIGNS

Posted on October 5, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

Tender New Signs is the kind of record that exists where experiences connect to the senses, where memories emerge and bring with them all the feeling and imagery that had been resting just below the surface of consciousness. It’s the title of Tamaryn’s second album, in partnership with her longtime collaborator and San Francisco native Rex John Shelverton. Informing the layers and textures found on their debut full length The Waves, this new opus takes a bold step forward in structure and form. With it’s skygazing pop songs and impressionistic sketches of once well-guarded emotions, Tamaryn and Rex have created a defining work. Continue Reading →

YOUNG UNKNOWNS

Posted on September 13, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

Brooklyn four-piece Young Unknowns are out with their new track “Far Enough”. The gorgeous follow up to the project’s well-received first single “Target Practice” taken from their forthcoming debut EP You Are A Young Unknown due out 10/2. Young Unknowns deliver emotionally charged lyrics and lush production infused with an edge of 90’s indie rock. Produced by Bill Racine (Rogue Wave, Mates of State) the forthcoming EP draws its influences from the likes of Sonic Youth, Kate Bush, and Curve, creating ethereal music you can still dance to. After leaving home as a teen, front woman and Oklahoma native Meredith Meyer first cut her teeth playing around the LA scene in a number of local bands before turning her focus solo and recording two LPs under her own name. Two years ago, in need of a change, she made the jump to New York and started over. Through a series of chance encounters and other fortunate twists, Meyer met drummer Matt Arbeiter, collected bassist Bryan Percivall and guitarist Mike MacAlllister, and thus just earlier this year Young Unknowns was born.

NIKI AND THE DOVE

Posted on July 31, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

Kaleidoscopic in the studio and a force majeure on stage, it’s no surprise that Niki & The Dove, Malin Dahlström (voice, songs) and Gustaf Karlöf (keyboards, songs) met while writing a wide range of music for the theatre. But they’re definitely, and boldly pro-pop: simultaneously simple and complex but ultimately devastating pop music.

ACTIVE CHILD – JOHNNY BELINDA

Posted on July 4, 2012 by Maxim Deluxe

Active Child is the working name of electronic music artist Pat Grossi, a 28-year-old guy  from Los Angeles. Grossi grew up as childhood chorister, and the music he makes shows he’s still a choirboy at heart. Grossi sings in a keening, soaring falsetto whilst building glittering cathedrals of sound from harp, synths, drum-pads and creepy vocal effects. It’s canonical music, but it’s just as influenced by the stadium new-wave of Tears For Fears and the vocal-distorting electro-pop perversions of The Knife. In 2010, Grossi released his debut EP, Curtis Lane. A year later, he followed it up with his first-ever album, the incredibly impressive You Are All I See. This second album confrim all this great artist “good intentions”. Watch The New Official Video –  Johnny Belinda on Vimeo.
