Make-up addicts like me lead a hard life. When your stash needs to be cluttered, you must be careful with your purchases, otherwise you’ll find yourself debating the invisible differences between two red lipsticks that are actually the same, while you know you’re just fooling yourself. At the same time, whenever a new interesting collection is released, your mind says “I want it all”, maybe because it’s attracted by a peculiar inspiration or a name. Oh, make-up items with appealing names are the devil! They attract you on many different levels and you, poor addict, are too weak to say no. NARS was the first brand who got me with this marketing strategy: it was 2008, I was ready to give birth to my daughter and I purchased Orgasm blush just before being hospitalized, because I knew that peachy-pink blush was what I needed to look human after the delivery. Another brand which always plays this trick on me is Deborah Lippmann: the artist behind the label has been a jazz singer for many years and loves music so much that all her polishes have the name of a song.

Now the famous manicurist of the celebrities has taken a step further in the game of appealing product names with her latest limited collection, Wicked, inspired to the Broadway hit musical Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman [1]. First produced in 2003, it’s the 11th longest-running Broadway show; Lippmann celebrates its 10th anniversary with a beautiful nail lacquer trio which is “as wickedly mesmerizing as the characters who inspired them.”

I’ve been into nail polish for most part of my life but only recently I’ve realized less and less mainstream brands are really worth the money they ask for a bottle of nail paint. The most overrated brand is obviously Chanel, whose nail polish chips on me in the blink of an eye, but many other brands are. They have loyal fans, true, but they don’t really bring forth anything new. Indie brands are a completely different story and I’ve often explained why: they can’t compete with giant brands when it comes to advertising, retailing and turnover, but the creativity they put in their products has no equals. Just take a look at the newly-launched Once Upon a Prince and More Man Candy collection by Lynnderella and see if I’m not right.

A bit of glitter has never hurt anyone, right? This is so much true when times are dark and you feel you need something to cheer you up. As for me, I will always praise the woman who has been literally spreading the word of glitter in recent years. I’m referring to Lynn Chrisman, the creator of the indie nail polish brand Lynnderella, whose creative adventure is a constant source of magic. Talismans and Birthstones is the brand’s latest, exciting collection – 13 shades paying homage to precious and semi-precious stones, each one symbolizing a different month (plus a wild card).

As a nail polish addict I like keeping up-to-date on the releases of my favourite brands. Most of the time, they all focus on major trends and it’s rare to find someone who really introduces something unusual. Deborah Lippmann glitters are surely one of the most exciting products ever, but a new protagonist has been rising lately: I’m referring to the one and only Lynn Chrisman, the queen of franken/indie polish, the mind (and hands) behind Lynnderella. Explaining the originality and complexity of her creations is very hard, because their colour combinations, textures and visual effects are so unique that you really must judge by yourself.

Can you feel that special thrilling chill in the air? It means summer is gone for good! Autumn will soon be here, with its sleepy and romantic atmosphere, ready to gather us in its warm embrace. Autumn has always been my favourite season: it has a special spooky charm that other seasons don’t have, thanks to a festivity which is not part of the Italian calendar but fascinating nonetheless. Halloween has quickly become a global festivity, but in some parts of the world it nearly coincides with another, much older festivity, the Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), celebrated in Mexico and in other cultures. Skulls (calaveras) and skeletons (catrinas) are the symbols of this holiday which have served as inspiration for So So Skullicious by OPI.

Are you ready for next autumn? Have you started packing your books and buying new stationery for the upcoming school year? Even if you finished attending school many years ago, that feeling of starting something new in September has always been with you, I bet. For me it’s different: school has never ended for me, I’ve just changed point of view – from student to teacher – so the second half of August carries a special and thrilling atmosphere of expectation. The arrival of autumn will bring a change in your outfits and on your nails, too. I like wearing neon nail polishes all year round, but if you feel like sporting something more season-appropriate, you will surely appreciate Stylenomics by Essie, the fall 2012 collection which features a beautiful palette of rich colours perfect for chilly months.

One of the advantages of being a nail polish addict is enjoying the launch of a new collection, especially when it is inspired by a celebrity or an upcoming blockbuster movie. Addicts like me start perusing the collection, looking for the shade which will soon turn out to be the most coveted one. I’ve never been one who wants to grab a bottle of a sought-after polish at all costs, but I can totally get the excitement of those who do it.

Don’t you feel like the arrival of summer is so late this year? Rainy days in June are sometimes romantic, but everybody is waiting for the sun to peek through clouds and to shine, so as to let summer in. Despite the October-like weather we’re having, there’s a way to pretend hot weather is already here: paint your nails neon! This trend comes from the 80s and is here to stay, as shown by many nail polish brands which have recently launched neon colours for real and fake nails. China Glaze, one of the most famous American brands, has taken the brightest summer shades ever and put them in bottles: the result is the summer 2012 collection, aptly called Summer Neons.

After the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee, Great Britain is getting ready for another important event, which will put its capital – London – at the centre of the world: the Games of the 30th Olympiad. Butter London, an iconic British beauty brand, has often released limited-edition nail polishes to celebrate special occasions – just think of No More Waity, Katie (a sparkling greige lilac dedicated to Kate Middleton) and Lillibet’s Jubilee (a silver metallic foil for Queen Elizabeth II). Now that July 27th is quickly approaching, Butter London has produced a commemorative Olympic Heavy Medal set, inspired to the three medals given to athletes.
