LIZARD BONES BECOME THE CLAY – AND THERE A SWAN IS BORN

Fashion journalists and buyers are often skeptic when a celebrity decides to widen her horizons and design clothes (or to put her own name on clothes, which is what happens most of the time). It’s true in many cases the efforts of these celebrities-turned-designers are destined to fail, but there are some rare examples of success. The most notable is surely The Row, the brand founded by Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen in 2007. The unique sense of style of the former actresses served as a starting point for their brilliant collections.
As a luxury brand, The Row includes an accessory line, as well – jewellery (designed in collaboration with Ileana Makri), sunglasses and bags. “Exotic” and “expensive” are the key words of the bag collection: an alligator tote by the Olsens retails at 30,745 euros, for example, but there are many cheaper items, too. The classic lizard bag, for example, is definitely cheaper but more interesting in shape and vibe. Clearly inspired to the men’s bag which was in vogue in the 70s, it perfectly sums up understatement and elegance. Made of camel lizard, it has a top handle and detachable strap, gold metal hardware, metal mirror plate and case and two internal compartments. It has not been designed to be an everyday bag, but its modern – yet old-fashioned – shape and precious leather are enough to turn it into an object of desire.
